Beyond Diversity: Valerie Smith and the Importance of Intersectional Leadership in Predominantly White Institutions

DOWN

Valerie Smith (princeton.edu) Valerie Smith (princeton.edu)

July 1st, 2015 marks an event that many students of color at predominantly white institutions could imagine only in their wildest dreams: a black feminist scholar will become the president of Swarthmore College. Valerie Smith, who has served as Princeton University’s Dean of College for the past three years, was announced president-elect of the private liberal arts college this past February.

Smith is an accomplished leader making history in more ways than one with her election. An interdisciplinary scholar of African American literature and culture, Smith brings an intersectional perspective to academe as a woman of color invested in mobilizing education for social change. While at Princeton, she founded the Center for African American Studies and led initiatives to diversify faculty members and the student body.

At Princeton, Smith also chaired a committee that examined the academic and cultural experiences of low-income and first-generation students…

" The Matter of White ManNess: The Bad Apple Argument NOT"

When people hear stories of police misconduct, brutality and murder under law or videos of college students singing songs of lynching Black people or elected officials creating legislation designed to oppress and discriminate many are quick to defend the system as a whole and say that these are just examples of “a few bad apples”. We submit that such arguments are ‘bullshyt’. These problems are definitely systematic and "the bad apple arguments" do not pass the test of logic.
Does not a rotten apple pollute all the apples in the crate ? Or, is their bacteria in the crate which infects all the apples ? This racist behavior living in a “specialized white male culture’ living off of white privilege and supremacy is impossible. It pollutes and empowers whatever real or assumed power they are granted. Our children die and live by this system. Our tax dollars support it.

The Chauncey DeVega Show on TruthWorks Network

This Episode: "A Conversation With Journalist Lou Dubose About The Killing of Michael Brown and Ferguson

Our guest, Lou Dubose talks with us on the killing of Michael Brown by Darren Wilson, and the police riot in response to citizen activism.

Lou Dubose, editor of The Washington Spectator. He is a very accomplished and experienced journalist who has written for the Nation magazine and has also appeared on news programs such as 60 Minutes.

Mr. Dubose has written an excellent series of stories about the events in Ferguson based on his experiences there in the aftermath of the police riot against the town’s black and brown community.

In this conversation, Lou and I discuss the racial geography of Ferguson, what he learned from the young people he spoke to about their experiences with police harassment, how the police responded to the media, the inter-class tensions within the black community in response to the protests about Michael Brown’s death, and his thoughts about the grand jury investigation into Darren Wilson and the future of Ferguson if the latter is not put on trial for the killing of Michael Brown.

The Department of Justice issued a report on Wednesday detailing what it alleged was the Ferguson Police Department’s pattern of racial bias and violations of people’s Constitutional rights.

Shortly after the release, Attorney General Eric Holder held a news conference in which he said the police had created a "highly toxic environment" for the residents of Ferguson, especially for blacks.

"These policing practices disproportionately harm African American residents," Holder said, according to prepared remarks from the news conference. "In fact, our review of the evidence found no alternative explanation for the disproportionate impact on African American residents other than implicit and explicit racial bias."

According to the report, between 2012 and 2014, blacks made up 85 percent of the department’s vehicle stops, 90 percent of citations, and 93 percent of arrests, even though they comprise just 67 percent of Ferguson’s population.

In the 105-page report, the Department of Justice described numerous accounts from Ferguson residents about their interactions with police officers.

Does the report or the path established by the DOJ adequate to address the findings and the "new jim crow" era of police terrorism against Black people in America?
