Living Witnesses to the Truth of America

Gray-Haired Witnesses for Justice was founded as a call to those whose lives span generations of Black struggle, resistance, survival, and transformation—to bring the authority of lived history to the continuing struggle for authentic justice and freedom.
We are not merely students of this history.
We are witnesses.
We carry familial memory of slavery and its aftermath, the lessons of Reconstruction and its betrayal, the knowledge of Jim Crow and racial terror, and the lived experience of the Civil Rights, Black Power, and New African movements.
Gray-Haired Witnesses calls upon that memory not for nostalgia, but for work.
For justice.
For those wrongly incarcerated, unjustly punished and denied due process. For Black families and communities damaged by systems that have too often denied us the very justice they claim to administer.
And for generations coming behind us who must know not only what happened, but what we did about it.
The Founding Call
We are the beneficiaries of familial recall of slave and post-slavery narratives; we who lived under the wise and aged guidance of the Black learned, those of the struggle and survival of Black Reconstruction; the understanding of the risks, terror, and dangers of America’s continuing oppression through that period called Jim Crow.
We are the frenzied many who gave life to new liberating eras called the Civil Rights, Black Power, and New African movements, ushering in new global ancestral connections, embellishing and making way for an independent and distinct culture and dignity.
We, whose lives pressed forward toward a new freedom, demand true justice and an uncompromising freedom.
The Gray-Haired Witnesses for Justice call for authentic systems of justice for all who have been denied the benefits of true justice.
We stand especially with our Brothers and Sisters incarcerated wrongly, unduly, and without due process—punishing, injuring, and destroying Black families and communities.
We know racial terrorism, no matter its root or level.
We can see it, smell it, and dare to name it.
We put on our shoes, grab our keyboards, draft the calls, and do the work of STRUGGLE for Justice and authentic freedoms, declaring full agency in a country where we have given so much.
Though we were born “colored” and “Negro,” we are the children, the witnesses who first cried “Black Power,” continuing an ancestral imperative to always do the work of the struggle.

The Ancestral Imperative
Gray-Haired Witnesses was founded upon a simple but profound understanding: those who have lived the history carry a particular responsibility to bear witness to it.
Our gray hair signifies more than age.
It represents memory.
It represents experience.
It represents what we have seen, what we survived, what we built, what we resisted—and what we know.
The witness must be preserved. The lessons must be transmitted. And where injustice persists, the struggle cannot simply be handed to another generation without our continued presence in it.
More than sixteen years after its founding, that obligation remains.

Gray-Haired Witnesses for Justice was founded on May 24, 2010.
” More than 100 years later, Gray-Haired Witnesses, Black women with a new Freedom Movement, calling on this nation, stand in the spirit of those proud men and women who won hard-fought victories in struggle and blood. Thousands of ordinary Black people joined thousands of people of all races to stand with courage and fight for the rights and liberties inherent in the Constitution. On the other hand, other people worked relentlessly to move the nation backwards by building an America where only one race and their freedom and bodies mattered.”
