The Progressive Movement is a PR Front for Rich Democrats

OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus‘s insight:

"It will come clean, pressed and laundered through Organizing for Action, the latest incarnation of the Obama Money Machine which has recently morphed into a “nonpartisan non-profit corporation” that will  ‘‘strengthen the progressive movement and train our next generation of leaders.’’

The Wrath of the Bureaucracy

OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus‘s insight:

"The command structure of bureaucracies is hierarchical, or what is called a “vertical pyramid power structure.” This is how Max Weber, the great sociologist, described this topdown arrangement and its consequences:

The principles of . . . graded authority mean a firmly ordered system of superiority and subordination in which there is a supervision of the lower offices by the higher offices. . . . Rational     calculation . . . reduces every worker to a cog in this bureaucratic       machine and, seeing himself in this light, he will merely ask how     to transform himself into a somewhat bigger cog. . . . [Such an institution’s] specific nature. . . develops the more perfectly the more bureaucracy is dehumanized."

The Arithmetic of Desperation in Detroit

OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus‘s insight:

The residents who remain are the portrait of an American underclass: over a third of Detroiters live in poverty and 17 percent of them are unemployed. Detroit is, to put it bluntly, a very impoverished city.

Why Republicans Hate Thomas Perez

OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus‘s insight:

"In order to avoid being “Borked,” Perez will adopt the “Souter” defense.  He will go intellectually limp.  He will give a whole new meaning to the term “vague.”  He will speak in generalities so broad and vacuous, no one will have a clue what he’s talking about, and when confronted with a direct and unavoidably controversial question, observers will fear he’s lapsed into a fugue-like state."

For sexual harassers, undocumented farmworkers make the ‘perfect victims.’

OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus‘s insight:

So she didn’t tell the boss. And she didn’t tell her husband either, afraid he’d be so angry that he’d pick a fight and they’d both get fired—or worse, deported.

Police Union and NYPD Collaborated to Set Arrest Quotas – In These Times

See on Scoop.itOUR COMMON GROUND Informed Truth and Resistance

OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus‘s insight:

"In the audio clip, recorded in 2009 by officer Adil Polanco, a union delegate argues for "20-and-1": a monthly quota for each officer of 20 summonses and one arrest. According to several police interviewed by The Nation, some officers are forced to "seek out or even manufacture arrests" in order to meet quotas and avoid department retaliation. "

Dying vet’s ‘fuck you’ letter to George Bush & Dick Cheney needs to be read by every American

Imagine that you’re Bush or Cheney and you’re reading this…

OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus‘s insight:

I would not be writing this letter if I had been wounded fighting in Afghanistan against those forces that carried out the attacks of 9/11. Had I been wounded there I would still be miserable because of my physical deterioration and imminent death, but I would at least have the comfort of knowing that my injuries were a consequence of my own decision to defend the country I love. I would not have to lie in my bed, my body filled with painkillers, my life ebbing away, and deal with the fact that hundreds of thousands of human beings, including children, including myself, were sacrificed by you for little more than the greed of oil companies, for your alliance with the oil sheiks in Saudi Arabia, and your insane visions of empire.

A new study shows that black women are excellent customers for the nation’s abortion clinics.   The abortion rate among African Americans, according to the Guttmacher Institute, is 41 per 1,000 women among the 15-19 year old age group.

OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus‘s insight:

“There’s no definitive research that’s actually been able to answer that question. We just do know that African-American women, including African-American teenagers, just have more pregnancies,” Jones said.

The plaintiff in the Supreme Court case challenging the use of race in college admission looks to be the perfect argument. But the case barely mentions her. Instead, the agenda is much broader: To fight race-based policies everywhere.

OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus‘s insight:

Nearly 60 years after that Supreme Court victory, which changed the nation, conservatives freely admit they have stolen that page from the NAACP’s legal playbook as they attempt to roll back many of the civil rights group’s landmark triumphs.

Candidates and campaigns have more power to tell their own version of history than ever before.

OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus‘s insight:

A new Pew report on the state of the media exposes one of the worst-kept secrets in politics: reporters are losing their power to frame presidential contests for the average citizen.
