“Truth is by nature self-evident. As soon as you remove the cobwebs of ignorance that surround it, it shines clear.” – Mohandas Gandhi
In one of his first major speeches as U. S. Attorney General Eric Holder said, “Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot,” he said, “in things racial we have always been and continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards.” Though he spoke from his perch as the first Black Attorney General in the United States, appointed by the first African-American President our public discourse of thing racial, as he went on to explain, continues to be immature and simply whispered, if at all. It is amazing that the Holder statement was characterized by the mostly white commentators in this country as “controversial” and “combative”. Few, other than Black people, called it “truth”. There is no better analogy for the differences in Black and white America on America.
It is clear that in America race matters. Our national resistance to talk about how we measure its impact and the outcome of its import continues to problematic. The value that we place on the perspectives of Black people continues to be marginalize. We hold back, weigh our thoughts and ideas for public consumption. Too many Black people continue to approach race discussions with shame and apology. There are many reasons for this, and we suggest that the importance of “place” is one of them. Identifying and affirming Black place is a critical element of healing Black pain. Throughout history race has set America’s moral compass. Africans stolen, stripped of culture . . . language, religion, and humanity, ultimately place.
In a 1985 interview with Janice Graham, the founder of TruthWorks Network, Dr. Amos Wilson said this, “ If we do not persist to talk with each other in respect in regard to our condition we cannot expect to ever raise ourselves up . . . independent conscious talk show like give us that opportunity, to organize, regroup and build consensus and affirmation. It assists us in raising ourselves up . . . there are dire consequences of not raising ourselves up and ultimately we head toward total demise.”
TruthWorks Network offers programming which values, maximizes and includes the special perspectives of Black American. Ours is a platform and microphone for the “Black truth” on America. It is a place where we come to examine, declare our injury, heal ourselves and prepare for new battles with new solutions. At TruthWorks, we dare to believe in the Power of Truth.
