It’s presidential post election 2012 and President Obama is preparing to enter into his second term as he and his administration prepare to lead this country up until 2016. As we are well aware, the president received significant support from various groupings and had to pay a political price to achieve that goal. He delivered “don’t ask don’t tell” and “same sex marriage” for gays, the “dream act” for the immigration population and “equal pay for equal work” for women (white).
The question is what about the Afrikan/Black community that produced 93% of our vote for the president without his making a commitment to establish any programs of a tangible nature that would have benefited our community. While he was delivering for other groups, his constant refrain to us was “stop complaining” and “the rising tide will lift all boats!” Those are quotes that lacked substance then and still do right up to this very day and rightfully so, resulted in criticism, including from yours truly in several of my past blog entries.
President Obama is feeling secure with the knowledge that this will be his last term and if he so chooses, can now openly acknowledge that he is an Afrikan/Black man and not be in fear of alienating the white electorate. In his first public outreach to our (Afrikan/Black) community, he made some calls after his re-election victory and convened what I would describe as a ‘Negro summit at the White House!!’ He invited Rev. Al Sharpton, Ben Jealous (NAACP), Marc Moriel (Urban League) and a few other obscure individuals who felt they were free and honored to be invited to the White House.
Let me be clear in that I am not trying to demean the character of the above mentioned group, but we need to drop the Negro agenda and replace it with a strategy for an Afrikan/Black agenda. My position is supported by the fact that are not these the same people who have allegedly had the “president’s ear” for the last four years. During those years, they had few opportunities to meet with the president and even then it was mostly for social events and “photo ops.” President Obama had a strategy to give them some visibility and leave the impression he was sensitive to hearing about our needs, but in reality his lack of action demonstrated just the opposite.
You cannot meet with the president with an aura of seeking a handout and begging for help from a position of weakness. The end result is that we as a community have received nothing in return. President Obama is a very intelligent man and knew that the individuals he met with were just happy to be able to come to the White House and had no intention to make him accountable to anything. In the four years that Rev. Sharpton and company have met with and “kissed the president’s ring,” our unemployment, incarceration and homicide rates have skyrocketed!!!
